Born into a family where music and dance were integral parts of daily life, Benjamin's earliest and most profound influence was his mother, a lay nun with a deep connection to psalms and choral music. Her morning renditions of psalms and evenings filled with the classical symphonies of Handel and Mozart, along with the energetic beats of The Beatles and 80s music, formed the eclectic soundtrack of his childhood. This rich musical environment was further enriched by his sister's interest in piano, leading them to explore music together through private lessons.
Benjamin's musical journey was profoundly shaped by his initial mentor, Mrs. Dorothy Ipere, a distinguished music educator. Her guidance laid the cornerstone for his evolving compositions. A celebrated figure, Mrs. Ipere earned the moniker OGENE VATICAN after clinching second place in the World Religious Songs competition held in 1983, representing Nigeria and performing before the Pope. Inspired by his mentor's accomplishments, Benjamin aims to infuse his choral pieces with life through collaborations with various choirs. His goal is to create globally resonant music that offers healing to the world.
Originally from Nigeria and now based in London, United Kingdom, Benjamin's music is significantly influenced by the vibrant and diverse London music scene. This cultural melting pot has inspired him to produce high-quality, soul-touching music. His unique style, which he describes as "soulish," resonates deeply with listeners, offering a fresh perspective in the realm of soul-pop and liturgical music. He aspires to create a new niche in church music and lead younger artists in exploring this uncharted territory.
Benjamin's music stands out not just for its emotional depth but also for its ability to connect with listeners on a spiritual level. His breakthrough pieces - "My Love For You," "Bata Dinwenu," and "Gozie Nna Nara Anyi" - have touched many hearts, especially within the church community, speaking to themes of surrender and simplicity in faith. His song "Happy Birthday" has also made its mark on the UK iTunes charts.
While music remains his primary passion, Benjamin also engages in administrative work and projects that promote the simplicity and beauty of life. His future aspirations include collaborating with renowned artists to create music that transcends boundaries and continues to touch souls worldwide.
Benjamin Ukoh's journey is not just one of musical exploration but of connecting with the human spirit through melodies and lyrics that emanate from the deepest parts of the soul. His journey is a testament to the power of music in healing, comforting, and inspiring.
